Warm Ups

August 2, 2015: Update
I updated my warm-up set - the new file can be found here.
- Mary

I finished getting my warm ups ready for MFM2P semester 2! A huge thank you goes out to the teachers from whom I stole, especially Andrew Stadel for Estimation 180, Fawn Nguyen for Visual Patterns (the Visual Patterns are linear until week #11, then a mix of linear and quadratic) and John Stevens for Would You Rather.

Here is the link to my file in DropBox - it is a Word file so please edit to make these work better for you! Also, note that there are a couple of days missing when we don't have school.

  2. Do you give this out as one document at the beginning of the week?

    1. I copied all 18 weeks of it and put it in a duo-tang for each student. The duo-tang never leaves my classroom.

  3. Hi Mary,

Would you mind sharing how you went about choosing the specific activities that you chose? I'm interested in the underlying process....
    Thanks!

    1. I chose a mixture of warm ups that relate directly to the 2P curriculum and that help improve number sense. Counting circles are all about helping students with number sense and showing them how they can break numbers apart. Estimation 180 helps them with our board-wide summative which generally includes some estimation. Visual Patterns are just all-around fantastic. They help students find patterns, see them in different ways and connect them with algebra. I also try to connect them with the linear/quadratic graphing that we do in the course. Would-You-Rathers have a lot of conversions in them which is another part of the 2P curriculum and are good opportunities for students to collaborate and share their solutions. Math talks are really important to help students see multiple solutions. Daily Desmos are just good practice at finding the equation of a line. Balance Benders lead nicely into solving linear equations.

Next year I will reduce the number of Would-You-Rather warm up and add some WODB ones : )

    2. I was going to create something just like this for next year! I'm so lucky that you've already done most of the work for me. Thank you! I was just thinking that I would put some WODB in here! What is the source for the Balance Benders? Where do you store the Duo-Tangs? And do you 'count' warmups on students grades? How do you otherwise assess that students are participating and putting forth effort?
