Warm-Ups 2.0

Back at the end January, I created (i.e. compiled from all the great stuff out there) a set of warm-ups which I used in one of my classes last semester. Each student received a duo-tang* on the first day of classes with all 18 weeks of warm ups. These did not leave the classroom.

I have updated my warm-ups to include Which One Doesn't Belong?, Open Middle, along with better balance benders. There are also now quadratic visual patterns thrown in from week 6.

*Apparently the term "duo-tang" may be a Canadian thing. This is what I am talking about:

  3. Mary, I consider you a warm up guru and was wondering if you could give me your opinion on this. I am now teaching on a true block schedule - I see each class every other day. I still want to do the different warm ups each day but am struggling with how to work them out. I've thought of three options:
    1) Still designate days (Monday Estimation, Tuesday Patterns, etc.) and just deal with the fact that they'll only see 2-3 different ones each week.
    2) Go two days at a time (if A day is MWF one week then B day will have the same warm ups on Tuesday, Thursday, and the following Monday) and just mix up when they are doing each activity.
    3) Have it be completely random what warm up they do each day based on how I feel...
    I think students like the continuity of knowing a certain day has a certain activity, but how would you do it if you saw each class every other day?

    1. Firstly, I don't consider myself a guru at anything! As for how to deal with warm ups when you only see a class every other day, I think I would rotate through them. Monday/Tuesday would be Estimation 180 for a few weeks, then switch it up. Wednesday/Thursday would be visual patterns for a few weeks (or always because I love visual patterns!) then switch it up. Friday could be WODB. After doing a few weeks of each (Estimation 180, VP, WYR, WODB, balance benders, math talks, daily desmos, etc.) students will be familiar enough with all that you can then do them in whatever order makes sense based on what you are doing in class. Just my 2 cents worth :)

  4. Thanks so much for sharing your document via Dropbox. I have made copies and am using your organizational format to create warm ups for each of my various classes (7th math, 8th math, pre-algebra, and algebra 1). I am going to use the warm up sequence you have created with my algebra 2 students. Since I see these classes all year, I am going to add weeks up through week #36 to your work. I will share those with you when I am done.
